Larry Gopnik es un hombre bueno. Es un marido fiel y afectuoso, un padre entregado y un profesor serio, siempre justo y correcto, a pesar de las tentaciones diarias que le acechan. Pero un buen día, todo empieza a ir mal. Su mujer le deja sin explicarle realmente por qué y su insoportable amante convence a Larry de que debe dejar el domicilio conyugal por el bien de los niños y mudarse a un motel. De pronto, la carrera de Larry se ve amenazada por una serie de anónimos en los que le acusan de traiciones sin concretar nada. Y para colmo, el amigo de su mujer muere en un accidente de coche y ella insiste en que Larry pague el entierro.
Larry, que tampoco anda muy bien de dinero, debe hacerse cargo del entierro de un hombre al que odiaba, abonar la fianza de su hermano jugador, además de intentar proteger su buen nombre y su carrera. A pesar de tantas desgracias, es imposible no reírse de la mala suerte de Larry en un mundo que quizá nos sea demasiado familiar.
